The ageing population is a subject of ongoing debate and interest, and more and more of us are finding ourselves in a situation where we’re raising kids and caring for older relatives simultaneously. As children, we rely on our parents, and as we age, the tables turn, and we assume responsibility for looking after our mums and dads. If you’re raising children and taking care of ageing parents, here are some tips that may prove useful.
Managing your time
It can be difficult enough to manage a schedule when you have children, or you’re responsible for caring for older family members, let alone trying to divide your time between two camps. Time management skills are crucial when you don’t have many spare minutes in the day. Make use of diaries and apps, and try and simplify your routine to create more time. Learn to say no if you’re pushed for time and people are making demands, for example, your boss is asking about overtime or you’ve been asked to help out with school runs or babysitting. If you’re already juggling too many balls, you don’t want to add any extras into the mix.
Exploring your options
As our parents age, we reach points where decisions have to be made, and it’s wise to consider different options. You might have fit, healthy, active parents who just need a little bit of help around the house or the odd taxi journey, or your relatives might need more intensive care. Weigh up your options based on your individual situation. If you’re struggling, or your parent needs medical attention or round-the-clock care, there are people out there that can help. You could look into home care services or visit some nursing homes. Many of us are anxious about making this decision, but often, it’s for the best. Take the time to research, ask for recommendations and view homes in your local area.
It’s natural to have reservations and concerns about abuse and neglect, especially if you’ve seen TV programmes or news stories related to this subject. Hopefully, you’ll never find yourself in this scenario, but if your loved one is in a care home and you are worried, there are some extremely knowledgeable nursing home abuse attorneys out there. Look out for physical and mental signs and changes in behaviour. In the vast majority of cases, nursing homes provide high-quality care and a comfortable, safe, welcoming environment, so try not to dwell on the headlines if you have decided that this is the best option and you’re about to start your search.
Asking for help
If you feel like you’re swimming against the tide, or you wish there were more hours in the day, there is no shame in asking for help. Whether you could do with an extra pair of hands to get the kids ready for school, you need help with arranging care for your parents, or you’re longing to have an hour of peace, reach out to friends, cousins or siblings. You could also look into researching community-based services or support groups that might be able to offer advice or provide assistance.
Raising children and caring for elderly relatives at the same time is a challenge. If you need advice, or you’re unsure which path to take, explore your options, manage your time carefully and don’t be afraid to ask for help.
