5 Reasons You Should Have a Family Pet

Ad

Did you have a pet as a child? Do you remember how much you loved them? When I was little we had a cat, called Scooter, and I adored him. I was heartbroken when he had to be put down. When I got my own home I knew I wanted a cat, living on my own as I was at that time, I wanted something to come home to. Jasper was that cat and he’s been with me now for 13 years. He’s a nuisance at times, but he has his own little personality (albeit a bit cantankerous) and I’m glad he’s a part of our life.

When Damian and I completed the purchase of our current home we heard about a stray cat being rescued who had had kittens that needed homes. It seemed like fate and about eight weeks after moving in I picked up Fin. He is a funny little character and those who walk up and down our road know all about him!

But why should you have a family pet? Here are five reasons why.

1 – Cats really do have a sixth sense

Cats really do seem to know when you’re feeling down and will come over and nudge you. There are lots of studies that suggest a link between pet ownership and lower blood pressure and lower risk of heart attacks! They are very calming to watch I find, and animals, if looked after properly, do love unconditionally.

2 – They’re excellent pest controllers

Now, this might seem like a downside, but cats are excellent at pest control! Mice and rats don’t stand a chance in and around where we live and we’re often presented with a mouse or two, especially in the summer months. Looking at our sweet pictures from vectorpets.com and you wouldn’t expect him to be quite the prolific killer he is!

3 – They can teach children a lot

Animals can teach young children a lot, and can often be the first step of responsibility. All three of our children know to check that the cats have biscuits and freshwater down and will either add some if needed or tell us and we can do it. They also teach children the importance of being gentle and kind. One of our cats is a monkey for getting himself into scrapes and has needed teeth removing and abscesses treating over the years. After a trip to the vet, the children know they need to be extra gentle, especially if nursing the effects of an anaesthetic.

We have spent lots of time around the cats over the spring and summer months this year and the children have been busy drawing their own images of our cats (but if you’re looking for a more accurate image if might be best to get a professional pet illustration)

4 – They’re always happy to see you

Who can resist the wag of a dogs tail or the feel of a cat purring as it intertwines itself around your legs when you return home. When Jasper was younger he would lie down in front of us until we stroked him, following us around. After a hard day at work or a difficult day with the children, sitting relaxing with the cats is a great way to destress.

5 – You’ll never be talking to yourself

And finally, if you catch yourself talking out loud in an empty house… you were, of course, talking to the cat…
