Family vacations are great – a chance to spend time with the kids, bond as a family, create new memories, and share amazing new experiences. But unfortunately traveling abroad as a family isn’t always an option.
Luckily, you don’t have to miss out on a great family vacation just because you can’t travel! A staycation with the family can be just as fun as an elaborate trip abroad, and exploring your hometown and your local area can be an exciting adventure. You might just discover a whole range of amazing spots you never knew existed!

Have a beach day
Families lucky enough to live near the beach can grab their towels, rubber rings, and beach umbrellas, and enjoy a day of sun, surf, and sand, but even if you haven’t got a beach nearby you can still have beach fun. Find a local swimming hole or river, and discover the joys of wild swimming, or see if your city has an ‘urban beach’ where you can sit on a deckchair and enjoy the sand between your feet.
Go on a bike ride
Grab your helmets and bikes and head off on a family bike ride. Find local biking and hiking trails to explore, or just hit up your hometown’s best parks. Biking is great exercise, and a fun activity for the whole family to do together.
Put on a show
Challenge your kids to create a family talent show, or dress up and put on a play for the rest of the family. Kids get the chance to learn a new skill, or wow the family with secret talent, and will love the chance to put on a costume or try out a magic trick or two!
Camp in the Backyard
Camping is a great family vacation idea, and you don’t have to travel anywhere to spend a night under the stars. Set up a tent in your back yard, roast marshmallows or make smores over a (small, carefully constructed) campfire, and do a bit of stargazing without living your home! Best of all, you can sneak off to a real bed once the kids have fallen asleep!
Explore the local sights
Everyone has a list of landmarks and attractions in their local area that they’ve been meaning to get to for ages, or haven’t been to in years, but just can’t find the time to visit. So take the opportunity of a family staycation to fix this state of affairs! Head to that new kids’ museum, learn about the history of your hometown at a nearby historical landmark, or just spend a bit of time wandering around your own corner of the map. You might be surprised at what you’ll discover!
