If you’re a reader of my blog or follow me on social media I am sure you have heard of Mrs Hinch and her ‘Hinch-Army’. Now, what she has done in terms of building her social following is impressive but I must admit the whole thing does make me cringe.
I’ve written before about trying to cut down on our plastic consumption and waste in general and one of the things that I have become increasingly conscious of in recent months is the need to have more ‘eco-friendly’ cleaning products.
I’ve always tried to buy products that are cruelty-free; steering away from the likes of Proctor & Gamble and instead favouring those products that have the leaping bunny logo on – a rigorous standard that means they’re cruelty-free.
It can be a bit difficult to find the right products to help with ‘green cleaning‘ but it does seem to be getting, thankfully, much easier. There are companies such as Pattersons that offer a range of household cleaning products as well as a great range of commercial eco-friendly cleaning products.
As I said, I do cringe a little when I see the Mrs Hinch stuff as well as her followers all getting a bit excitable with the Zoflora. Personally, I find the smell of Zoflora a little overwhelming but can see its appeal as a cleaner as when I have used it in the past I have been impressed with it’s cleaning ability. My preference these days, however, is to use Astonish products in the bathroom and kitchen and try to limit their use elsewhere.
The one area I have, however, struggled to find a good eco cleaner is for washing powder. I have really cut back on fabric conditioner usage since having the children. I used to use it in every wash but now I rarely use it at all, and, like Zoflora, I can find the scent a little overpowering now. I haven’t yet found a good eco soap powder that works for us in terms of low plastic content, effective cleaning capability with natural products and cost. We also have the additional considerations of Daniel and H who can sometimes get minor allergies if we change the soap powder so I need to balance against that too. If anyone has any tips for good products to try do let me know!
I am glad to see a greater awareness of eco-friendly cleaning products and I really hope the trend continues. It’s also encouraging to see companies taking on ‘zero waste’ options by having refill solutions and I hope to visit a local store offering such a service soon.
