Education can be an expensive thing, especially if you’ve taken it upon yourself to teach your children from home. If you’re a home educating family, there’s a good chance you’re not the only homeschoolers in your area! And because of that chance, there’s opportunity to band together and raise some funds for your educational needs; you’ve got books and teaching resources to buy, and you don’t get the same type of funding a traditional school would. So, without further ado, here are some of the best ways to raise money for those thinking of setting up a home education co-operative.
You Need Something Small Scale
You’re a homeschooling family, and because of that, you probably only have four or five people to depend on. Because of this, the fundraising for your school needs to be a little more small scale – nothing like a full blown summer or Christmas fair – you don’t have the numbers to raise anything substantial here.
Instead, more private, family contained events are more likely to work. Band together with some other home education households in your area to have a movie night, or a big dinner, where people can pay to put on their movies, or discuss over some good food (with donations!) how to put together a bigger money pot.
Get the Community Involved
However, following on from the point above, you don’t have to be completely alone in your fundraising efforts. Yes, you’ve got other homeschooling families on side, but you could also reach out to your local community too, and get more help.
Maybe you’re a part of social groups like evening classes or weekly exercise clubs, or maybe you visit a church on a regular basis. Either way, you can reach out to the people here as well. These people know you, know what you do, and are more likely to be willing to help out. Plus they’ll be able to spread the word, and that’s always easier to do when you’ve got 20+ people on your side! Ask them if they have any old resources they’d be willing to gift your group and utilise contacts for lower price venue hire.
Show People What Your Home Ed Children are Doing
Get the children to do a fundraising project fair. Something like a fundraiser for a local charity of an endangered animal charity. The children could put together a short display or presentation showing what they’re learnt about the charities work. Ask people to purchase raffle tickets or you could run a second-hand book shop. Split the monies raised between your home education co-op and the chosen charity.
Getting your local community involved, and letting them see just how much your home educated children are learning will build some good faith here. and it’s a great way to get people actually interested in your efforts here!
