I don’t pretend to be the go-to person for the best places to go in Manchester, but occasionally, Damian and I do enjoy a trip into the city. I thought I’d share some hints and tips for the best places to head to if you’re in Manchester for an evening.
The Theatres
We are blessed in Manchester to have some fantastic venues to watch theatre productions. One of my favourite venues is The Palace Theatre Manchester which is just superb. It has a fabulous history and attracts some of the very best productions to the city. We have seen some superb productions there over the years and I really love it as a venue to watch live theatre. There are some superb productions coming up this year, so if you are stopping in Manchester do check out https://www.best-tickets.co.uk/ to purchase your tickets. The Lion King is there later this year and it’s one I’m thinking of getting tickets for the children as Damian and I so enjoyed it when we saw it in London many, many years ago.
Restaurants
Manchester boasts many fabulous restaurants; there’s any manner of cuisines to be found and some fantastic little spots hidden away. For something super tasty and family-friendly we love Dough in the Northern Quarter, and Damian tells me that the hip hop chip shop is worth a visit too.
I like Albert’s Shed in Castlefield and there’s also The Ivy which I understand is worth a visit if you’re local. There’s a number of distinct zones around the city from the Northern Quarter (my personal favourite area of the city) to Castlefield and Spinningfields. You can head along Deansgate to find a bar or something to eat. There are of course plenty of the usual chain restaurants to be found dotted around the city as well as plenty of independent restaurants too. There’s some fabulous Thai and Chinese food to be had in the city so it’s worth a little research before you go to find the best place for your meal.
Cocktails
If, like me, you enjoy a sneaky cocktail or two then there are plenty of spots to enjoy a cocktail. If you’re after a view of the whole city then the Cloud Bar in the Hilton hotel is worth a visit. It’s looking a little tired these days inside but the views across the city are unrivalled. We went recently for Afternoon Tea which was delicious. We opted for cocktails and there are some wonderful choices to be had and on a clear day, you really do get a fabulous view across the city.
If you head to the Northern Quarter, there are gin bars, whisky bars and everything in between; again well worth a visit to that part of the city.
My perfect evening in Manchester is dinner, followed by the theatre and then for a cocktail (or three) in the Northern Quarter. I so enjoy the city and am thankful that we have all the trappings of the city within short distance of our home.
