General Life Musings

New Year New Plans

I don’t know about you, but I’m not a huge fan of new year resolutions; I kinda think it puts pressure on to *do* something, or to keep up with doing something. I much prefer to have a broader reflection on the things that I’ve enjoyed during the previous year that I might want to carry into the next year as well as some general thoughts on things I’d like to achieve. These are usually quite broad thoughts such as ‘get out walking more’ or ‘repaint the kitchen’. Things that are broadband achievable. I know that many ‘experts’ will tell you to set SMART targets, things that are specific and time-bound, but that doesn’t work for me.

Here are some things that I have chosen as my broad plans and ideas for 2022 and what things I’d like to do.

House

Hopefully we will know what we are doing house wise this year; some plans will, hopefully, become more achievable this year, Either way we need to sort out our kitchen which is in need or an overhaul. The cabinets are old (and probably weren’t terribly expensive so they’re looking very much like they need replacing!). We have tried to learn more about different types of cabinets and units and I like the idea of something being custom made to make the best of the awkward space that we have. We do know that we want something light and airy which plenty of cupboard space to store everything.

Friendships

I definitely want to continue to make the effort to maintain and nurture friendships outside of the kids’ activities. Thinks like holding a Spa party can be a good idea(https://www.spartygirl.com/ have some great subscription box ideas for this), or just getting out for a walk or something to eat. I definitely enjoy these relationships which have been made via the children but am grateful that we can enjoy time without the children too!

It can be a bit too easy to maintain relationships through a phone; sending WhatsApp or Facebook messengers. Whilst these options are great for quick messages and sharing things, getting together with friends gives a different vibe and builds closer relationships.

Staying Active

I have definitely learned over the last four or five years that being active is a hugely important thing for me – I notice when I haven’t been out and active. For me working with a trainer helps me to stay focused and pushes me to do things that I wouldn’t necessarily do on my own. It also gives me accountability and a reason to get up early and get out.

I also want to get back into running, but might start more with more regular walking. We will see how I get on with that.

Staying active can take any form that suits you. I think sometimes people get really hung up with ‘going to the gym’ and doing something very formally recognised as exercise. It might be that you’re really into dancing or you’re in a group of Celtic axe throwers – whatever your thing is, embrace it and use it to stay active.

As you can see, I have three broad ideas for 2022; I’d love to hear if you do new year resolutions or if you do something much broader, like I do.

I am Sarah, home educating mum of three (born 2012, 2014 and 2016)
