How To Take Care Of Your Parents

As your parents begin to get older, you may find that your roles change slightly and you are suddenly having to take care of them as opposed to the other way around. Although they may be adamant about maintaining their independence, for the most part, there are plenty of things you can do to help take care of them and provide them with the support they will need.

Ensure their home is accessible

As we get older, we may find certain tasks more difficult. Something as simple as running upstairs to grab something suddenly takes us twice as long, especially if we are facing mobility issues. Therefore, you must ensure their home is accessible and meets their needs. Thankfully, there are plenty of small amendments you can make to their home that will make a huge difference. This includes:

  • Installing handrails, particularly in the bathroom or the bedroom so they can get in and out of bed easier. They minimise the chances of nasty falls as they provide them with extra grip and support.
  • Installing a walk-in shower. This means they don’t have to manoeuvre themselves in and out of the bath.
  • Installing a home lift to make going up (and down) stairs easier. Thankfully, this has never been easier with companies such as Terry Lifts, who are experts in their field and can help with both installation and lift maintenance – in the UK and beyond.
  • Making the most of technology.

Encourage regular activity

Regular and consistent exercise is always important – no matter what age we are. It also helps ensure that they stay mobile. Therefore, you should encourage your parents to take part in light exercise every day. It does not have to be strenuous, just enough to help them feel refreshed and ready to go! It can be as simple as going for a 10-15 minute walk each morning!

Let them know that they are valued

Sometimes, those who are retired or no longer working feel as though they are undervalued – and we still have a lot to learn from our parents. Therefore, you should always ensure they know just how much you value them and their experiences. If you are homeschooling, why not allow them to lead some of the lessons? This will help them develop a stronger relationship with their grandchildren, and they can often impart expert wisdom that you wouldn’t get anywhere else!

Listen to them

Too often, we are so busy with our own lives that we forget to take a step back and listen to those around us. If you think your parents are struggling, reach out and let them know you are there to listen. Take a break from whatever you are doing – and spend quality time together – even if it is just over the phone. You should also encourage your children to show them love and support – as this can make a huge difference to their mood and lift their spirits considerably! You should also ensure that they keep in touch with old friends so that they aren’t missing out on socialising with others their age.
