As per WHO, adverse effects from these substances typically occur only above certain exposure thresholds. Paraquat dichloride, a highly toxic herbicide, serves as an example of a dangerous pesticide. It is commonly used for weed control and is significantly more toxic than other well-known herbicides like glyphosate. Paraquat causes immediate damage to the digestive tract lining upon contact. Once in the body, it spreads throughout, primarily affecting the lungs, liver, and kidneys. The amount varies based on a number of case-specific criteria.

Organic Pesticide Alternative Found Through Essential Oil Research

Tokyo University of Science researchers have discovered data supporting the potential for an organic pesticide alternative. Through studying plant essential oils, the researchers found rose oil, in particular, to be promising as a natural pesticide.

In experiments on tomatoes, rose essential oil increased the expression of genes responsible for plant defense. Tomato plants treated with rose oil experienced less damage from moth larvae and mites compared to the control. Further field tests showed rose oil reduced pest damage by 45.5% versus the standard solution.

The research team believes rose oil’s defensive effects come from compounds like β-citronellol, a known insect repellent. At a low concentration, rose oil attracted the predatory mite Phytoseiulus persimilis to feed on the pest Tetranychus urticae without directly harming the pest.

If rose oil or similar plant-derived alternatives prove effective in larger-scale farming, it could enable more sustainable and organic agricultural practices. The discovery offers hope for reducing pesticide usage while still protecting crop yields.

Further studies are still needed, but these initial results suggest that essential oils may provide a natural and eco-friendly means of controlling agricultural pests. With additional research, organic farmers may gain a viable organic pesticide option.

Eco-Friendly Homemade Insecticides

Soap Spray

Soap spray is a natural and effective homemade pesticide for controlling many common garden pests. A basic soap solution can manage insects like spider mites, aphids, scale, mealybugs, and whiteflies.

As per Treehugger, to make the spray, combine 1.5 teaspoons of a mild liquid soap with 1 quart of water. Look for a castile soap which is gentle and plant-safe. Mix the soap into the water until it dissolves completely. Then spray the solution directly onto any leaves, stems, or other surfaces where pests are present.

The soap spray disrupts the waxy protective coating on an insect’s exoskeleton. This causes dehydration and eventually kills the pest. The spray can be reapplied to control reinfestations. To avoid over-drying in direct sunshine, use in the morning or the evening for the best impact.

Garlic Repellant Spray

Many common garden pests can be effectively prevented by using garlic as a natural repellent.  While garlic may not directly kill insects, its strong odor deters many from feeding or laying eggs on treated plants.

To make a garlic spray, peel and puree two bulbs of garlic. Let the puree sit overnight in 1 cup of water. In the morning, strain the garlic-infused water into a quart jar. After adding a teaspoon of liquid soap and half a cup of vegetable oil, fill the jar completely with water.

Fill a spray bottle with one cup of the garlic mixture and add water to the top. Spritz the repellent onto plant leaves, stems, and surrounding soil. Garlic spray has been shown to deter aphids, cabbage worms, leafhoppers, squash bugs, and whiteflies from infested vegetable and flowering plants.

Reapply the spray every 5 to 7 days for ongoing protection. The pungent garlic scent creates an effective natural barrier against many common pests in the home garden.

Salt and Vinegar Mixture

A salt and vinegar mixture can give organic gardeners an effective homemade herbicide for unwanted weeds. Vinegar’s acetic acid damages plant tissues when applied, while salt enhances the desiccating effect.

Vinegar acts as the primary active ingredient, burning foliage upon contact through its acetic acid content. Adding sodium chloride in the form of table salt boosts the ability of the solution to dry out weeds completely.

This herbicide works best on young, actively growing weed varieties. Deeper-rooted or persistent weeds may require reapplication. It’s also important to note this method can potentially harm beneficial soil microbes if overapplied.

To make the solution, mix one gallon of white vinegar with one cup of table salt. Fill a spray bottle with the mixture and add one tablespoon of dish soap.
