I can often feel like I spend so much time flitting from place to place, job to job, that it’s often difficult to remember to sit down and take some time together as a family. It’s especially important now I think as the children are getting just that little bit older that we take time to just ‘be’ with them.
It’s hard sometimes when there’s washing and ironing to sort, garden work to do, sorting out and the such, but I’m a big believer in making time – it’s all about reordering things and being more productive. We have been out for some short walks, or when one of us has taken Miss E or Mr D to their swimming or gymnastics classes, the other of us has tried to spend a bit of time with the other two children.
We don’t always get it right, but one thing that we have been enjoying together is playing Top Trumps. I remember playing with my Dad’s old set of Top Trumps as a child with my cousin. Many hours of fun to be had, and I was thrilled to see that there is a new Retro Collection out at the moment. We have had great fun with these recently, and have the Exotic Sports Cars and Crazy Cars Sets.
We have been playing these games in the evening in that time after dinner but before bed time. The children love playing it, and Mr D is getting good at practising his reading as he reads out the category and both Mr D and Miss E are better getting to grips with their number and the concept of hundreds, tens and units.
I love how games like this have made a comeback and at just £4.99 each they really are a bargain. I’m sure Damian might be tempted by the 90’s footballers pack – it would certainly bring back a few memories I am sure for him.
I love Top Trumps as it’s such a simple game, and it’s lovely to be able to see Mr D begin to be able to play this without our help – he is quickly learning which are the top speeds etc and which categories might win the hand. It’s lovely to see that growth.
I think we will be playing Top Trumps for a while to come yet, and I’m hoping we get another pack or two in the coming weeks/months as we have a few birthdays and of course Christmas too work through. I hope that as the children get older we will enjoy more time to sit and just play games together, and I look forward to the days of digging out games like Monopoly and Trivial Pursuit for us all to enjoy!

We were sent two packs of Top Trumps in exchange for a review. All words, images and opinions are my own.
