Anyone who knows me will know I am so looking forward to the end of this week and the end of all our planned activities and the chance to just stop. Nothing for me to prepare for, no sessions that I am running, and time to enjoy the one time of the year that I stop planning things and just totally relax and slow down.
We tend to do a lot of ‘traditional’ type things at this time of year. We hunker down in the living room by the fire and jointly work on a jigsaw; we have a Christmas Disney jigsaw which is a favourite here and a couple of other smaller 500 piece jigsaws that we will work through over Christmas and New Year.
We also play a lot of board games together. Very have a brilliant range of toys and games this Christmas and their delivery is super speedy too. I’ve shared below some of my favourite games that we have been, and will continue to play, over the coming weeks into the New Year.
Classic Board Games
I really don’t think you can go far wrong with some of the classic board games; there’s a reason they’re classics! I know Monopoly is a bit love/hate in some households but as a child I loved Monopoy and my own children enjoy it too. They will play it together and we have just got the World Football Stars version which the boys, in particular, are really enjoying.
Em loves a spot of Cluedo and last year they got the junior version which we play often. We have just got the ‘full’ version and I need to refresh myself on the rules and have a game of that over the weekend with her.
Finally, I remember my parents had an old well-used version of Trivial Pursuit that they would often play on a Saturday evening. Damian and I have a version of Trivial Pursuit but I couldn’t resist the family edition. I was really surprised with how well all three children did with the ‘kids’ questions and I think there’ll be a few games of this over Christmas and they may well take it to their Grandparents when they stay there later this week. I don’t think you can beat playing board games for a lazy afternoon.
Card Games
We have a good range of card games and the children always seem to have a game or two out. We have Uno, Dobble and Exploding Kittens which are on constant rotation and all are all a lot of fun. I like the speed with which these games can be played, if you’re not really feeling like setting up for a longer board game these games tend to be played much quicker and they’re also a little more active – certainly with my children who seem to jump about as they play the various cards.
Card games are always a lot of fun and the rules tend to be quite quick to pick up so you can get on and play quickly.
Christmas Karaoke
At our Christmas nativity last week we ended the session with a Christmas Karaoke – it was all a bit impromptu and involved the children singing without musical accompaniment to various carols and hymns.
My three LOVED this and I can see a Karaoke machine being on their wishlist at some stage. This is a great gadget for keeping children and family entertained over Christmas and it’s something to suit all ages and I know my three enjoyed their impromptu singalong last week and can be a fun way to keep them entertained!
