Another month passes by and we are now moving into the summer term, and the final term of this school year. We have had a busy month and are thankful that we seem to be on the way to better weather now! Spring seems to have taken its time to get going this year but we have certainly had some nicer days during May.
At the time of writing, D is 10, E is 9, and H 6, so Year 5, Year 4, and Year 2 respectively.
Core Subjects
As ever, the core subjects of Maths and English have been a regular constant here. The children have a pack of books that they work their way through and many of those are on the way to being finished up over the coming weeks, with a few completed during May. These work on spelling practice and comprehension work.
We have continued on with maths no problem. H finished his latest book and has now moved into the next year’s book. He is doing well with this and maths is certainly one of his stronger subjects. D is doing well with his book and will be on target to have completed the years books come the start of September I think. Em is also doing well and is exactly where I expect her to be.
We also did a STEM Live session in May which looked at the work on the new Everton FC stadium. The boys are both football mad and it was a short session (around 45 minutes) which looked at the development of the stadium and some of the considerations that need to be made when building it. This was interesting and it sparked some good discussions afterward.
Projects
We have carried on with the deep dive study of the Song Walker books, and I want to relly focus on finishing this in June. We also finished up our Industrial Revolution project and took a visit to the Science and Industry Museum in Manchester to see the old machines. Sadly a lot of the museum is undergoing work so the Power Hall that I wanted to visit was closed, but we got to see the things we wanted to. We have also almost finished the Victorians work, I just want to tie up some loose ends on that during June.
We also worked through the CGP Americas book. This has been a slightly longer project than initially anticipated, but we have enjoyed it and Em, in particular, has produced some excellent written work for this. Humanities is where D tends to excel, and it’s a subject area H has far less interest in which means it can be a bit hard maintaining his enthusiasm after a while!
D also looked at spreadsheets using the Oak Academy online lessons. There’s more to do on this over the summer and I’m going to get him to design a spreadsheet I think to log football results for a competition we might do. Practical application of his learning will really help to embed it I think.
Regular Groups
All our regular groups except for Athletics have been up and running. , Beavers, Cubs and Scouts, Spanish, Swimming and Music lessons as well as D and E at their running club. .H got to join in with one running club as it was quiet, so he was thrilled with that.
We also helped out at the cubs and scout spring fair which helps to raise monies to keep the group running. We manned tombolas and helped to tidy away at the end. The children love these fairs and it’s a great way to give back to the Scout group. H has only had two Beaver meets due to bank holidays and half term, but he did enjoy going Pond Dipping to a local park with the group.
Other Bits & Pieces
We have had a few days out during May, in attempts to make the most of the better weather. We went to a local May Day celebration at the start of the month, been to an RSPB workshop that a friend organised and had a weekend away. During the weekend away we visited a large RSPB reserve as well as a transport museum and a round of crazy golf.
The children have been helping in the garden and have been working on various creative pursuits, the most recent of which is ‘diamond painting’. We also ended the month with a trip to Wembley to watch the Stockport v Carlisle game – a day out that all three children enjoyed.
Sounds like May was a good month all round (apart from the Stockport result)
