4 Food Safety Tips For The Home

Collaborative Post

Many people are cooking more at home, with research revealing that the pandemic and inflation are two main factors accounting for this. Making home-cooked meals is a great way to save money while making unforgettable family dinners in your kitchen. But while at it, food safety is one essential factor you must consider. It matters not only in restaurants but also at home. If you’re searching for practical yet simple ways to ensure your food hygiene is always at its best, below are some safety tips to guide you.

Practise frequent handwashing

Frequent handwashing is a top way to keep germs and bacteria at bay. Before you start cooking, give your hands a good scrub with soap and warm water for at least a solid 20 seconds. Remember to wash your hands after using the washroom, blowing your nose, or working with raw meat. This way, you avoid picking unwanted bacteria. Also, don’t leave your hands hanging wet when handling food and kitchen utensils. Dry them off properly as early as possible, as damp hands can invite bacteria.

Store your food properly

Pests can still sneak in even when your place is spick and span. That’s due to many reasons, such as your neighbour’s food scraps serving as an attraction to these creatures. Contamination is a no-go zone, especially in the kitchen, and it’s unsafe to have pests getting access to your food. They can climb all over your kitchen items, which can prove problematic. Although rats and cockroaches might seem small, they can carry many diseases that can significantly harm you and your family. Therefore, it would be a smart move to bring in pest control services to keep your food safe.

Separate cooked and raw food

Separating raw food from the cooked ones is a solid way to prevent cross-contamination. While cooking, you may unintentionally transfer microorganisms or bacteria from one item to another, leading to most foodborne infections. Therefore, it’s advisable to use different utensils, cutting boards, and containers for your cooked and raw foods to prevent this. Raw meats, for instance, carry some harmful bacteria, but a good temperature and thorough cooking can deal with that. So make sure to cook your meat at the right heat level to eliminate any harmful bacteria.

Know your food expiration dates

Expired food can be a breeding ground for bacteria and other bugs that you dont want on your plates. So, make it a habit to check those dates and toss anything that’s past its prime. Aside from helping to ensure your food is always safe to consume, it’s also a great way to declutter your fridge and keep everything well-organised. Now, you can easily reach the ingredients you need to make a safe, delicious meal.

While preparing your delicious homemade meals, remember to take steps to keep them safe, tasty, and nutritious for longer. These four tips can help you achieve this. It’s not just about cooking but being the kitchen pro who makes every meal a wholesome one for your entire family.
