Why You Should Consider a Customised Number and What Regulations Do the DVLA Have in Place for Them?

If you are in reading this, then you must at least be considering the idea of getting a private number plate. The very fact that you are interested in them is the first and possibly the most important reason why getting personalised number plates is likely to be a good fit for your car.

Let’s now take a deeper look at the process, why people buy personalised numbers, if any of the reasons are applicable to you and of course, what the law has to say about getting customised metal registration plates.

If You Want a Personalised Number, Then There’s a Reason

Generally, when people want customised numbers for their cars, it is more than likely that they already have a good reason for that. After all, getting your own preferred number from the DVLA is significantly more expensive than getting an automatically issued number. As to what those reasons may be, we have compiled a small list of the most valid ones next:

  • You want to set your brand-new car apart from the rest in your office parking lot
  • It would be an investment towards branding your business
  • If the number is rare or customised enough, private numbers can get very expensive, which in no unclear terms, announces your status
  • The number represents a very special date/event in your life
  • You are planning it as a gift for someone close to you, who happens to be an auto enthusiast

What About the Plates?

Only the Motor Transport Department of the UK can issue private numbers, but what about the metal registration plates which will be displaying that number? It would be silly to pay so much for a private number and not to have a pair of decent pressed plates that can justify the investment.

Visit number1plates.com to design and customise both your front and rear pressed number plates in any way that you want to. All their 3M metal registration plates are made in Germany and the customisation tool is designed to not let a customer make any modifications which are not allowed by the DVLA.

Understanding the DVLA Regulations

Nothing is more important than legal compliance and road safety, so to ensure that any pressed number plates you order are 100% DVLA compliant when they get to you, go through the following highlighted aspects of the British laws that govern private plate customisations on UK roads:

  • Every number plate must show the registration number clearly, and the characters must not be altered in their arrangement
  • The registration number must not be illegible/hard to read
  • On failing to comply to the above, the offender could be fined as much as £1,000
  • An incorrectly displayed number will also result in the car failing its MOT test
  • The car owner can use metallic, pressed number plates, as long as they are reflective
  • The same rule applies for other types of non-metal/metal registration plates
  • The front plate has to have a white background, with black alphabets and numbers
  • The rear plate has to have a yellow background, with black alphabets and numbers
  • There cannot be any patterns or designs on either background, as it might hinder visibility
  • 3D metal registration plates are allowed

Maintaining the DVLA standards is not optional, so keep them in mind first before customising and ordering any pressed plates online. If the plate builder is any good though, then they should only be allowing customisations that are legal under the DVLA regulations.
