How to Save on your Winter Heating Bills

Ad

Winter can be expensive; there is the Christmas spend of course, as well as the added costs for simply keeping warm! It’s something we really notice now, particularly as I am at home during the day more than I would have been in the past when both Damian and I were in full-time work.

We have got better at saving on our heating bills which is important for us as it’s easily our most expensive utility bill. I have shared some simple tips and ideas here for how to save on your bills.

Layer up!

This might sound like a simple one but wear more layers! The number of times someone in the house complains about being cold and they’re wearing a thin t-shirt. I send them back up to put a vest on and a jumper. Those added layers make all the difference and often means that you can leave the heating off for a little longer.

We also have thick socks and slippers to wear in the house and for lazy sofa days we have some large blankets that we like to snuggle under. I often find the children snuggled underneath these reading.

Keep your boiler in tip-top condition

It’s worth making sure your boiler is working as efficiently as possible.  Get it serviced regularly and it might even be worth biting the bullet and having an old and inefficient boiler replaced. There are many companies, such as this Boiler Installation Leeds based company who can undertake servicing, repairs or install a new one if needed. It’s well worth getting your boiler checked over as, longer-term, it really does make a difference to the warmth of your home as well as the cost of your bills.

We spent some money a few years ago replacing the radiators in the downstairs room and this has made a huge difference to how warm the rooms get (and how long they stay warm for).

Consider the rooms in use

We have a woodburning stove in our front room. In the colder months we tend to use this and warm the one room rather than putting the central heating on to warm the whole house. It makes the room super warm all evening and means that the heating bills are kept lower as we aren’t unnecessarily heating the whole house.

Find the draughts

We had a number of draughts and finding and eliminating these had made a big difference. We have had windows replaced and sealed some other gaps to cut the draughts back. We also added more insulation into the roof when we had it re-roofed a few years ago. All things that contribute to the warmth of the house and in turn keeps the heating bills lower.

Are there any other things I’m missing? This infographic here has some great tips and tricks to help keep those bills as low as possible.
