An interest in letters

An interest in letters

Mr D is ever interested in letters and the alphabet. I can’t quite remember how and when it started. I have, for a while now, been sounding out letters for him, eg t t Thomas, c c cat etc. I think I probably started more formally introducing letters to him as part of our snail work (I think S was the first he recognised).

We we have been learning about the beach (b), castles (c) and other bits and pieces I’ve been introducing him to more and more letters. He does also have an alphabet jigsaw which he has more recently started taking an interest in (rather than just emptying all 26 letters all over the floor!).

When we are out now he like to point out the letters he knows on street signs, on car number plates and on signs – basically anywhere there is a letter he will point it out and tell me the ones he can see.

I hit upon the idea of making them some mats using a word mat from twinkl (I used this one and this one). I printed them out and laminated them and we use them as breakfast and lunch mats. They’re great for Mr D to tell me about the letters he can spot, as well as learning some more. They are also great for Miss E who is starting to talk more and more each day and is always keen to point out the things she knows from these mats.

I am really pleased with this little idea as it’s proven really effective for them both and I’m going to print some more off soon with high frequency words on etc for Mr D to start recognizing letters in words.

twinkl alphabet mat

I’m so excited for this next phase in Mr D’s development, and of course for Miss E as she begins to be able to communicate (verbally) her world around her.  Even better they both treat it as a bit of a game and don’t realise that they’re learning along the way!
