This week’s NonFiction Gem is the wonderful What On Earth? Birds book bu Mike Unwin and Pauline Morgan. Let me start by saying I am a big fan of this series of books, and have, in the past share about a couple of the others we have. They’re such well thought out books and one that really engages the children. (We have reviewed Robots before).
Birds are, of course, a familiar sight where ever you are in the UK. Since having the children, I am getting much better at identifying the different species that fly into our garden and I really delight in spotting the visiting cormorant, Great Crested Grebes and the Kingfisher when we head to the local rivers and lakes.
What I really like about the What on Earth? series is that a takes a ‘cross-disciplinary’ approach – it helps children to link together arts and crafts with science and history and culture too. The books are delightfully illustrated and really help children to learn more about birds. There are endless snippets of facts and information from information about birds eggs to the food that birds eat.
I like that there are lots of hands-on things to do, things from making bird cakes, painting an egg, testing how strong an egg is as well as tips for identifying and tracking birds down.
This book is a truly wonderful addition to the What on Earth? series and one that little nature lovers (and their parents) will adore.
What on Earth? Birds is published by QED and has an RRP of £9.99 other books in the What on Earth Series include:
