Today marks the publication of a lovely new children’s book The Museum of Me by Emma Lewis.
The book is a beauty and demonstrates the awe-inspiring nature of museums (of all kinds) and asks children to become curators of their own personal collections. Miss E and I have read this together and she was able to recall some of the museums we have been to together.
What I like about this book is its distinctive collage style illustrations, mixing bold illustrations with newsprint and photos. It is quite different to out usual books and is something I will explore with the children when they’re a little older.
The book encourages the reader to think about what would be in their own personal museums and it got me to thinking about what my five items would be.
I think my #mein5objects would be:
- My wedding ring – this was my nana’s and after she passed away it was left to me. There was no doubt that when Damian and I get engaged that my nana’s ring would become my wedding ring.
- A photo of the children – nothing defines me more than my role of mum to them. They’ve taught me a huge number of things about myself and made me view the world in a different way.
- My mobile phone – it’s my window to the outside world on those days when I’m stuck under a sleeping poorly child. It’s the place I capture my day to day life and the space where I share and record my memories
- Books – of course my love of books would have to feature in my museum of me -how could they not!
- Trainers – I’ve always been keen to keep fit and healthy through running, walking and swimming. Trainers are my go to pair of shoes for day to day life with the children.
What would me your #mein5objects?
Suggestions for further activities
- Ask children to talk about museums they have been to; what sort of museum was it, eg: natural history, science, art?
- What other museums would the children like to go to?
- Provide a range of different materials for the children to create their own collage art. Materials could include magazines, newspapers, food packaging, tissues papers, paints and crayons. The children could create their own museum using these materials
- Talk to the children about what things they think would be in their museum of even what they think would be in mummy and daddy’s museum – you might be surprised by their answers!
