For Daniel’s first Christmas my auntie bought him a monkey soft toy. Monkey soon became a firm favourite of Daniel’s and he is a much loved little teddy. For his birthday my parents bought him a book which came with a small monkey soft toy. This monkey soon became baby monkey.
About six months ago or so the original monkey was renamed Daddy Monkey and at Easter a Mummy monkey was added to the group. It is fair to say that Daniel is a little monkey mad.
We have various monkey books and I was excited when I spotted a new one called Monkey and the Little One by Claire Alexander. The image of the monkey on the front reminded me of Daniel’s baby monkey and I thought it might be a book he would enjoy.
The story itself is quite simple. Monkey lives alone and likes to read, swim and generally be a monkey. He then, unexpectedly, finds himself joined by Little One. Little One follows Monkey and wants to join in, but Monkey simply wants to be alone – trying to make it clear to Little One that he needs to go away.
Eventually Little One takes the hint and leaves. Monkey finds himself all alone, just like he wanted. However he finds that being along isn’t as much fun as he thought it would be and sets off to find Little One.
This is such a lovely story about friendship and gentle acts of kindness and Daniel really loves this book. It has become his new bedtime book and he likes to join in with shouting ‘go away’ to Little One and then cheering when Little One and Monkey are reunited.
The illustrations are really lovely and each page is packed with colour from edge to edge. I also like the use of text in the book (larger and smaller to add emphasis). It will be a lovely early reading book for Daniel and Emma in due course.
What other monkey books should I add to our book collection for my monkey mad boy?
