Nearly everyone looks forward to the lazy days of summer. You may be dreaming about sunbathing on the beach, enjoying a cocktail as the sun sets or having a barbecue with your friends. One of the most important things you can do is stay cool during the heat of the summer. Some of the best tips and tricks are detailed below.
Stay away from hot and heavy foods during the summer. Not only does this mean you will not have to use a hot stove, lighter meals are enjoyable. Smaller meals and snacks such as fresh cold fruit surrounding a scoop of frozen yogurt or a nice crisp salad will help keep you cool while tantalizing your taste buds.
Stay away from synthetic clothing. This type of material will stick to your skin and make you feel hot. Try wearing clothing made from cotton in a light color with a loose fit. The lighter color will not absorb the sun nearly as much as the darker colors. Not only will you look great, you will be much cooler.
Fill plastic bottles with water and store them in your freezer. When you need to leave your house, take one of the bottles with you. The heat will slowly melt the water, providing you with a fresh, cold supply. You will be hydrated and feel refreshed.
When you are ready to go to sleep, place a few gel ice packs under your sheets. The best areas for placement are where you feel the heat the most such as under your neck, back and legs. The chill from the packs will cool you down and help you fall asleep. You can simply put them back in your freezer in the morning.
If there is no air conditioning in your home, place fans in strategic locations. Fill bowls or containers with ice cubes in front of each fan. Congratulations, you have just made your own air conditioner. You can also spend the day in a place with air conditioning such as a movie theater or a shopping mall.
Try to run any errands during the early morning or after the sun sets. These are the coolest parts of the day. If you work out, perform your exercises during these hours as well. Once you have finished, take a cool bath or shower. This will help you relax and cool down your body.
Close the blinds or draperies in your home facing the west and the south. This will stop the direct sunlight from entering your home to keep you cooler. Your best option is installing mini-blinds. They have been shown to decrease the heat from the sun by as much as fifty percent.
The summer is the best time to have a barbecue. Not only will you be enjoying the cooler temperatures of the evening, you will not be heating up your home by using the oven. You can grab a few containers of potato salad, cole slaw or macaroni salad from the store to compliment your dinner beautifully.
