I am so so excited to share this book, Counting Lions. with you. I have seen it on twitter a good few times and it was just one of those books that looked beautiful.
I was thrilled to be sent a copy and I can confirm that the book is even more beautiful than I expected!. I have a bit of a soft spot for all things animals, and have, in the past, treated myself to some lovely books that document some of the wonderful creatures we share the Earth with. Counting Lions is simply incredible.
The foreword from Virginia McKenna (founder of the fabulous Born Free Foundation) sets the scene and urges the reader to look at animals and their beauty and strive to do what we can to save them.
The book itself talks to you about animal welfare and the images that Stephen Walton has created are just beautiful. I struggle to pick my favourite – they are just all simply superb. Each image has a short piece of text that provides an insight into the animals. There is further information provided at the end of the book that gives information on their protection status as well as suggestions for further reading.
The artist Stephen Walton is a Supervisor at the Art Museum/Gallery in Bury and I was thrilled to see that he is giving a talk there about this book on 7th November. I am hoping to get along to that.
This is a book that will be treasured and used to teach my children about conservation and the importance of looking after the creatures we share our world with. The illustrations are superb and the animals seems to look directly at you, asking you to care, asking you to do what you can to ensure their survival.
There is a fabulous YouTube video here that shows a time lapse of the creation of the stunning lion that adorns the front cover of this book – it gives a wonderful insight into Stephen’s work.
Counting Lions will be a superb gift book for any animal lover; it’s a book I am thrilled to own.
More information about how you can get involved and support the work of the Born Free Foundation can be found here. All author royalties from the sale of this wonderful book will be donated to the Born Free Foundation.
