So…. the start of a new year. 2017. How time flies – I can’t believe we are in 2017 – it seems like yesterday we were all worried about the Millennium Bug – how I wish that was the biggest problem facing the world.
As I received messages to wish a Happy New Year, or saw Facebook, Twitter and Instagram statuses, it would seem that, for many, 2016 was not the best year. It was a year when politics was turned upside down with the decision to vote to leave the EU, the rise of the right wing press and of course the US election and the incumbent President Trump. I shake my head in disbelief sometimes at the nonsense spouted in the press, and the things I see and hear. I worry about the world the children are growing up in, but have to believe that, despite the uncertainty, things will work out OK in the end….
2017 is the first page in the diary. The chance to start things afresh. I rarely make resolutions, but there are a couple of things I’d like to do this year:
- Spend more time outdoors – the children, particularly Mr D, are more and more energetic and I am keen for us to get outside and explore the world. I am guilty of sometimes finding it too much effort to get the children sorted and outside. But, when I do make the effort I enjoy it, as do the children. So, with new wellies for us all I plan to be outside stomping in mud at least twice a week. I’ve earmarked a couple of places I want to explore in the coming weeks and I hope to share out mud stomping adventures here on the blog.
- Get back into running. Before I was pregnant with Mr H I was doing a lot of running. However, early pregnancy exhaustion and I stopped running. Post pregnancy I have ached if I have over done it, but I’ve noticed that the last couple of times I have been out for long walks I’ve been ache free. I hope to get my first couple of runs in this week. I’m not going to be unrealistic – I know it will take me time to rebuild the fitness levels I was at. But, I am hoping to complete a half marathon in the autumn time – so that’s my aim to work towards.
- Professionalize my blog a little more. My Christmas gift this year was a professional blog theme, so once we have sorted a new laptop out I intend to revamp the blog and try to get a bit more structure to it, and organsize myself a bit more.
- Have more screen free time. Both Damian and I are guilty of looking at screens too much in the evening, be it our phones, TV or laptop. I want to try to have set days for blogging work, working around when Damian is out or otherwise busy, and have at least one night a week when we spend time together not in front of the TV. We have a couple of jigsaws to work through as well as some games like yahtzee, Monopoly and draughts.
2017 also brings some big decisions for us in terms of schooling. We haven’t yet decided what we will do and there are pros and cons for both a traditional school route or a home education route. My heart says home education is the route for us, but making that decision feels like a leap of faith; a leap into the unknown I suppose.
We also have some work to do to the house – repair work to the ‘storage’ space as well as decorating Mr H’s room and redecorating the dining room. Depending on our schooling decision we may need to sort some new furniture for the dining room and have a change around.
This year also sees some big birthday’s across the family – 70th, 75th and 60th’s are all coming up. We will also see Miss E turn three soon, Mr H turn one and Mr D turn five. We hope to enjoy the celebrations each of these birthday’s bring.
I hope 2017 brings us lot of happy memories – I can’t wait.
