I feel like I’m meeting myself coming backwards at the moment with one thing and another so I haven’t really had chance to do any of the bonfire night stuff I’d thought about with the children. However, we did manage to squeeze in a quick craft today – probably one of the best quick and easy firework crafts I’ve managed to come up with!
We aren’t massively into fireworks here – the displays take place quite late after the children have gone to bed and I’m not really very fond of them myself however I think this year with it falling over a weekend we might head out for a walk with the children so I wanted to introduce the idea of rockets etc to them today.
We talked about the colours of the fireworks and I cut out some very quick rocket shapes from some cardstock, left a selection of crafty items and some glue for the children to set about decorating their rockets with.
This was a really quick activity to set up but it allowed the children to independently design their rockets, manipulating the different papers I had left out – Mr D chose to scrunch his up and Miss E placed them along the rocket.
Once they’d finished we affixed a straw to the back, and I cut out some lengths of crepe paper and affixed as a tail. The children loved doing this and they’re quite effective as they fly them through the air.
- To do this activity we used:
Card stock cut into a simple rocket shape - Coloured crepe paper – some pre cut into shapes and sheets left for the children to cut
- straws
- foam shapes
This is probably one of the quickest and easiest activities and invitations to play that I’ve set up but the children loved it and made a couple of rockets each. I am sure we will revisit this again and extend it by adding numbers onto the rocket to correlate with the children’s ages and use letter tiles to help them spell out their names.

Simple but clever way to demonstrate fireworks.
