As part of my new year plans I want to get better at managing our food waste. We seem to go through phases of having more food waste than we should do.
When I meal planned I found that we spent less and wasted less food, so I am going to endeavor to meal plan again.
Yesterday I spent a good bit of time sorting out the cupboards and clearing out food that is way past it’s date and reorgansied the various roasting dishes. I also made the decision to order a new slow cooker. Our current one has served us well, but eight years on it’s not as good as it once was and the last couple of times I’ve used it, it hasn’t been big enough for the four of us eating (and of course soon to be five when Mr H increases his intake!). So, that should be here by next week and I intend to make use of it by making soups at least once a week. I get a bit fed up of eating the same things for lunch and soup would also be a good thing for Damian to take to work once a week as a change too. So, if you have any fool proof slow cooker soup recipes do share them with me.
Our plan this week is a bit of a hodge podge as I try to use up what we have in, but it looks like this:
- Monday – Jacket potatoes with cheese, beans and coleslaw
- Tuesday – Spaghetti & Meatballs (I’ll have just the sauce)
- Wednesday – slow cooker chicken curry and a lentil dhal (the children will have a bit of both)
- Thursday – Lasagne – we have two lots of lasagne to use up in the freezer so will get one of these used this week
- Friday – Fish & Chips for Damian, cheese & Onion pie and chips for us
I have some carrots and potatoes to use up so will most probably make a carrot and lentil or carrot and cumin soup this week. Not too sure what I’ll do the potatoes yet, I might even make a bombay potato instead of the lentil dhal on Wednesday if I can find a reasonable recipe.
Snacks will include peanuts, bananas, oranges, grapes and apples. I personally need to increase the fruit that I eat so I am going to try to make more of an effort with this.
We shouldn’t have to buy too much this week food wise, just fresh bread and milk and then food for next week.
