The books are beautifully presented as a box set (although they are also available individually) and tell the story of Martin Mouse who seems to get himself into all sorts of trouble. Dr Hedgehog is the saviour in the stories and comes to Martin Mouse’s rescue. There are three stories, The River Rescue, The Postbox Rescue and The Tree Rescue.
The books are lovely, very well illustrated and the stories have really engaged Daniel. When they first arrived I thought they might be a little old for Daniel but we have read these at bedtime, one each night and he adores them – pointing out the Hedgehog and his beaked bean tin car and giggling at Martin Mouse as he slips into the postbox and finds himself in all sorts of trouble.
The box set also comes with three large posters, one for each story. They would be great put in a playroom or child’s bedroom. They are bright and colourful and great for reinforcing the story. Daniel has really engaged with these books and we will be using them to do some hedgehog themed crafts over the coming weeks I think.
I mentioned we have been reading these at bedtime so I don’t have any images of Daniel reading the books (I’m not keen on disturbing his bedtime routine for a set of pictures!) but they are regular reads at the moment for bedtime and they make a very nice change from some of the more common children’s stories that, as good as they are, do get a bit boring after the 100th read through!
When he came downstairs the morning after I had written this review, he saw the books and sat to read them, here is a short video.
I can really recommend these Dr Hedgehog books, and the presentation of them when bought as a set would make a lovely gift for a birthday or similar.
